John Newton (played by Albert Finney in Amazing Grace) wrote the words to one of the most beloved hymns of all time between 1760 and 1770, while working as an evangelical pastor. Son of the commander of a merchant ship, Newton was captain of a slave ship for many years, until he underwent a dramatic religious conversion while steering his vessel through a storm. Repenting and regretting the misery he had inflicted on the thousands of human cargo he had transported across the Middle Passage for many years, he devoted his life to the Church, and wrote the lyrics to many hymns which are still popular today. In 1780 Newton left Olney to become rector of St. Mary Woolnoth, St. Mary Woolchurch, in London.

Terribly Inferior
I’ve written several articles lately approving the new trends toward abstinence that have led to reductions in teen sexual activity, teen births and teen abortions. Expressing these views has brought howls of protest and filled my e-mail box to overflowing with verbal abuse from readers who hold the notion that uninhibited, promiscuous sexual activity is the key to the good life. They are happy to let me know, sometimes in the rudest possible terms, that I am unrealistic, prudish and sexually repressed. In Praise of Virginity

A campus psychiatrist at UCLA is drawing attention to the only study she has found on young men's responses to abortion. Those men, she asserts, are part of a group of abortion victims who have been essentially "invisible" to those in her profession. Mental health professionals, she says, need to stop ignoring the reality that abortion leaves emotional scars. The study on men's responses to abortion was not conducted by a mental health professional, but rather a sociologist and academic by the name of Dr. Arthur Shostak. Shostak surveyed 1,000 men sitting in the waiting rooms of abortion facilities across the U.S. and found that 80 percent of those men indicated that that had been the longest and darkest day of their life. SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Supreme Court today affirmed the parental rights of Cheryl Barlow, the mother of a 5-year-old child, granting Barlow's request to reverse a lower court decision that had granted parental standing to her former partner, a lesbian political activist. Hamburger Happiness
I once made a disastrous mistake and asked my husband Dave for the last bite of his hamburger. If there is anything that is hard for a man to sacrifice, it's that last bite. It's easier for him to give somebody the first bite because he still has so much of it left. But when he is down to the last bite, it's tough. I didn't realize before how much of a test it could be, especially for Dave.
Our exchange began as usual, with his offer, "I'm going to stop here and get a hamburger. Do you want one?" Don't Trade Happiness for Hamburger
