After talking with Chuck Rosenthal, District Attorney for Harris County Texas, more good news is on the way for the Houston area. About l996, the Houston City Council held hearings on constructing a new city ordinance passed in l997 -- involving all sex related businesses, including any location selling pornography. After a couple of appeals for our city ordinance by the owners of sex businesses in federal court until April 16, 2007, Rosenthal has been meeting with a committee and most importantly the captain on the vice squad. Both Rosenthal, and Captain Jett, plus citizen committees have promised to jail anyone breaking the 1,500 foot law where any sex businesses are located especially near children, schools, parks, and churches. At the urging of the Bush administration, the U.S. Supreme Court this fall will review a case concerning a federal law aimed at child pornographers. The Protect Act helped prosecutors go after Michael Williams, who was caught posting obscene pictures of toddlers on the Internet. Law enforcement shut him down, but the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the "promotion of illegal child pornography … is protected speech." It also declared that portions of the law are too broad and struck them down. Bruce Hausknecht, judicial analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said the appeals court went too far.
