Image:Gerald Ford.jpg Are Boy Scouts the answer for nonviolent/first time child offenders when assisting parents as a role model for their boys? Parents of a juvenile offender play an enormous role within the adjudication of a juvenile case. They are often an invaluable resource for information regarding their children. Additionally, "to preserve and strengthen the minor's family ties whenever possible, removing the minor from the custody of his or her parents only when necessary for his or her welfare or for the safety and protection of the public." A supportive family environment is imperative to demonstrate to the court that confinement is not in the best interest of the juvenile.

Harris County Texas has over 5,000 children on probation, with what would seem, a juvenile justice crisis in Houston. About 1,500 of those kids, who are nonviolent and first time offenders, can avoid the usual juvenile system and be placed with the Houston area Boy Scouts when sentenced -- upon the judge's discreation and depending on a supportive family.  "These kids, on the extreme end, if nothing is done to catch them, they're going to become our adult offenders of tomorrow." Currently, the district and county courts are each filled with over 51% of adult sex crimes. Studies show one in two sex offenders began his sexually abusive behavior as a juvenile. Responsible judges are ready to

implement the Boy Scout success story into the lifes of boys  at risk, thereby interrupting the growing numbers of adult sex offenders. Judge Kent Adams and Randy Hoenig with the Sam Houston Area Council conducted the first ongoing pilot program with more than a 67% success rate in stabilizing young boys. John McNamee, Director of Field Services, has readied the Houston area scouts for new members coming from various juvenile courts. Scouting builds character and strong communities. read more about the pilot sentencing.

Family Concerns

Joyce MeyerUntangle the Knots Picture your life as a jumble of shoestrings all tied up in knots, each shoestring a different color. The different shoestrings represent the different elements of your life, such as your family, your job, etc. This jumble of knots could represent many of our lives—with everything all knotted up. Each knot represents a problem, and the process of untangling those knots and straightening out those problems is going to take a bit of time and effort. It took a long time to tie all those knots, and it will take some time to straighten them all out.

I realize from my own experience that it often seems no progress is being made. You may feel you have so many problems that you are getting absolutely nowhere.
