   Child Abduction Murders

GREGOIRE MOORE The grisly murder and mutilation of 11-year-old Scott Drake is a rare event, but homicides of children by strangers motivated by sexual deviance are not. Although the FBI, the Justice Department, and private groups may generally keep data, a study by the Washington state attorney general's office found that about 100 children are abducted and murdered by strangers each year, most of them involving some form of sexual perversion. Funded by the Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the study shattered commonly held beliefs which "in the past have worked against police, parents and the victims," according to Christine Gregoire, the state attorney general. The study, finished in 1997, examined 600 child abduction-murder cases from 44 states over a three-year period. Updated statistics appear to support the 1997 data. The major finding was that there was approximately one child abduction-murder for every 10,000 reports of a missing child. Sexual assault was the primary motivation. The majority of the killers -- 53 percent -- were known to have committed prior crimes against

children, the most common being sexual assaults. Child abduction-murders: Why?

The internet today is filled with another set of pictures of Britney Spears being foolish. Here is a young woman with “star” quality that makes her stand out from thousands of other would-be, just-as-talented singers. That star quality, though, hasn’t made her life what she obviously hoped it would be. There is desperation these days in her pandering to the paparazzi. Those of us who lead ordinary lives sometimes think that life would be better without the burden of commonplace duties and responsibilities –– all the often-dreary things that tie us down and wear us out. All it takes, though, is a quick look at the gorgeous people –– women like Elizabeth Hurley, Demi Moore, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton and hunks like George Clooney, Patrick Dempsey, Ashton Kutcher, Johnny Depp –– to realize that their lives are not so wonderful and carefree after all. Who wants to be a celebrity?

For most of its history, Hollywood has been a liberal enterprise, with occasional exceptions like "The Passion of the Christ." And it's also been too darn predictable. Hollywood needs to make more movies that don't use its typical formula. One outside-the-box example is the raunchy summer comedy "Knocked Up" - its adolescent humor is infused with a conservative message. Coming attractions with substance
