“Parents and family members are the first and most important influence in a child’s life,” said Bush in a statement. “Families offer a stable and nurturing environment by providing love, guidance, support, and comfort … by caring for and spending time with their children, parents instill lifelong values and help build a better America.”The latest survey by the Census Bureau, however, paints a portrait of American families different from the one Bush and other pro-family conservatives have envisioned and fought to protect. The “Marriage and Divorce: 2004” report, released last week, revealed disturbing statistics on the state of families in the United States.According to the report, more than half of American couples who married in the late 1970s did not stay together long enough to see their 25th wedding anniversary, marking the first time since World War II that married people had a less than even chance of still being married 25 years later, as The New York Times noted. SCOUTING "They're fine," said Donna Johnston of the Boy Scouts' Occoneechee Council in Raleigh. "They're out of the woods."Johnston said the boys and their three leaders had gotten off a trail and decided to set up camp for another night. They waited until daylight rather than trying to walk out in the dark.Rodney Jones, an assistant Scout master whose son was in the group, said they followed their training."I knew they would do as they were supposed to do and that is hunker down," Jones said. "Everybody's in good shape, a little tired. They said if they had cell service, they would have called us. They were, as the Scout motto says, they were prepared." GENERATION GAP The sexual mores on the typical university campus have changed radically over the last 30 years. Coed dorms, coed bathrooms and the hook-up ethos are the norm both on campus and after graduation, but the evidence is now clear that cohabitation is a deterrent rather than a catalyst for lifelong marriage. Parents, pastors and mentors do young people a great disservice by their silence on this issue.When students go back to school, will they practice for divorce or prepare for marriage?
