  Misogynistic Issues

Review this artilce from l995 as we know the current pornography problems are off-the-chert. Promoters of sex tours are pimping women's bodies and sexuality through out the world on the Internet. This international communication network of computers is being used to sell women to a global market of men mostly from industrialized countries. In the last two years multi-media capabilities were added to the Internet which enables transmission of color, graphics, photographs, animation, sound and moving images. This new vibrant feature of the Internet is called the World Wide Web. Commercial interests are moving rapidly to take advantage of this new capability and the sex industry is leading the way. Advertisements and endorsements for sex tours, mail order brides, brothels, strip bars and escort services are easily and openly found on The World Wide Web. A few examples: * Men who have traveled and bought prostitutes use the Internet discussion groups, such as alt.sex.services, alt.sex.prostitution, and alt.sex.brothels, to give each other information and advice on buying women and girls. Descriptions of their sex tours are compiled into The World Sex Guide which includes: detailed information on where to go to find prostitutes, hotel prices, telephone numbers, taxi fares, cost of alcohol, the sex acts that can be bought, the price for each act, and misogynistic comments about the women.Often men include pornographic descriptions of what they did to the women (Atta and M. 9 October 1995). * In Summer 1995 an American man operating as PIMPS 'R' US advertised sex tours to the Dominican Republic on the Internet. He offered a four day, three night tour with a guide who would provide "practical information about how to find and deal with prostitutes and how to arrange group orgies." The price of the tour included "oral sex....provided by an attractive female whore chosen by the tour guide" (Mann, Summer 1995)i. * An advertisement for Erotic Vacations to Costa Rica quotes a price which includes double occupancy rooms and intra-country flights booked for two. "Your companion [a euphemism for prostitute] will meet you at your hotel..." If the tourist chooses a longer tour his "companion" is changed half way through the trip (The Travel Connection, 1995). * Degrading sex shows in Bangkok are advertised and promoted on the Internet. One promoter, claiming to be a sex researcher, shows a picture of a woman dancing and pulling razor blades from her vagina. A text description appears with the photograph (Odzer, 1995). Sex tourism, mail order brides and prostitution are variations on the theme of sexual exploitation. I will take a series of advertisements from a U.S. based agency and describe what is offered and show the connections among the forms of sexual exploitation. MORE MISOYGNY  For the past several months white mainstream media has been calling me to hear my views on gangsta rap. Whether major television networks, or small independent radio shows, they seek me out for the black and feminist "take" on the issue. After I have my say, I am never called back, never invited to do the television shows or the radio spots. I suspect they call, confident that when we talk they will hear the hardcore "feminist" trash of gangsta rap. When they encounter instead the hardcore feminist critique of white supremacist capitalist patriarchy, they lose interest. To white dominated mass media, the controversy over gangsta rap makes great spectacle. Besides the exploitation of these issues to attract audiences, a central motivation for highlighting gangsta rap continues to be the sensationalist drama of demonizing black youth culture in general and the contributions of young black men in particular. It is a contemporary remake of "Birth of a Nation" only this time we are encouraged to believe it is not just vulnerable white womanhood that risks destruction by black hands but everyone. When I counter this demonization of black males by insisting that gangsta rap does not appear in a cultural vacuum, but, rather, is expressive of the cultural crossing, mixings, and engagement of black youth culture with the values, attitudes, and concerns of the white majority, some folks stop listening. FAMILY CONCERNS

LOOK AT THE HEART

How is it that David is called a man after God's own heart? How is it that when God is talking to David's son, Solomon, he says; "Now if you walk before Me as your father David walked, in integrity of heart and in uprightness…then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever as I promised David your father." (I Kings 9:4-5) Then again, when God was reprimanding King Jeroboam, he said; "…and yet you have not been as My servant David, who kept My commandments and who followed Me with all his heart; to do only what was right in My eyes." (I Kings 14:8) David is the man who used his power to seduce a woman named Bathsheba while her husband was at war on King David's behalf. When she was found to be with his child, David arranged for her husband Uriah to be killed in battle to cover up the matter. David was an adulterer and a murderer. Is this a man after God's own heart? God looks at the heart Yes, God says that he is. When God was directing Samuel the prophet to anoint a new king over Israel after he had rejected Saul, he told Samuel; "For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (I Samuel 16:7) So despite his sin, God loved David's heart. I believe that we have a glimpse into that heart which God so treasured when we read Psalm 51, which is a prayer of repentance. That psalm is truly one of the great prayers of the Bible. After David's sin, the Lord sent him Nathan the prophet to confront him. David's Prayer of Repentance
