Tips for women on staying safe from Detective Kevin Coffey! These are well worth passing on, and are common sense for men, too. Please read this information from a woman who works for the police department. I have to share some things I have learned in my job with you. In my job, I review criminal and psychiatric files of imprisoned sex offenders who are approaching their release date. I decide if they are likely to re-offend based on certain criteria and then civilly commit them to a sex offender treatment facility if I decide that they are at significant risk to re-offend. I have read hundreds and hundreds of files, and have taken note of some of the mistakes women make. Let me preface this by saying that a woman is NEVER EVER EVER at fault for being raped or attacked, but there are definitely ways to reduce your risk of being a victim. Here are the most common mistakes women make that could result in them getting kidnapped, attacked, and/or raped:

  1. Getting into the attacker's car when he pulls a gun and orders you to get into his vehicle. Most attackers don't want to shoot you ... they want you to get into the car so that they can drive you to a deserted place and torture you. Don't comply. Run screaming. It is MUCH more likely than not that he will just move on to an easier target.
  2. Pulling over when a man drives alongside of you pointing at your car pretending something is wrong. If this happens, drive to the nearest well-lit and populated gas station and look the car over yourself (or ask an attendant). Never pull over. Believe it or not, many women have fallen for this for fear of their car spontaneously exploding in the middle of the road. Not likely.
  3. Opening your front door when you have not positively identified who is there. If you don't have a peep hole, get one. I've seen countless cases where the attacker gains access to his victims simply by knocking on their door. Don't let an attacker get into your home. He then has a private, relatively soundproof place to attack you. Women Safety Tips From A Woman Cop

CHILD PREDATORS The proliferation of child predators using the Internet to target young victims has become a national crisis. A study shows one in seven children will be solicited for sex online in the next year. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is urging all parents and teachers to realize the risks our children face online, and do something to stop the predators before they target the innocence of more Texas children. The Texas Attorney General's office is a national leader in tracking down and arresting online child predators. The Cyber Crimes Unit, launced by Abbott in May 2003, has arrested more than 90 predators who used Internet chat rooms to set up what they thought would be a sexual rendezvous with a young girl. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and top investigators from his Cyber Crimes Unit are spreading the message of online safety to children and parents through a series of Cyber Safety Town Hall meetings. The interactive presentation allow parents to hear straight talk about the risks of online child predators and the steps they can take to protect their children. DANGEROUS SOCIETY A few nights ago, I decided to take a stroll. It was a beautiful night; it was peaceful; there were thousands of stars. The only sound was from my footsteps on the sidewalk . . . a little wind . . . a few insects of some kind. It wasn't until after I got home that I realized that this, tragically, was a uniquely male experience. To be honest, I don't remember the last time I was afraid for my physical safety. When I decided to take a walk, I never once wondered if I would be safe in doing so. I felt like going, so I went. Men who read this will just nod; women won't. The idea of going out alone, at night, is simply not an option for most of them. And the small percentage of women who do go for a walk -- how many of them bring some form of protection -- a dog or a weapon of some kind? Most of them, probably. But none of that even occurred to me.    Make no mistake. I'm no martial-arts expert. I'm certainly no Terminator, like Arnold Schwarzenegger pretended to be when he was actually committing several acts of criminal sexual misconduct. I really have only one advantage when it comes to being safe in the dark: I'm male. Being a Woman in a Dangerous Society - Women Walking Alone ...
