ADA analysis of 2006 Cosmo:
The image and the analysis are for the purposes of showing grocery store shoppers, owners and managers why this magazine should not be displayed, let alone sold at grocery store checkouts. It is not our desire to offend you, but rather to demonstrate the offensiveness of Cosmopolitan. We sincerely hope that you, in turn, will be offended when you come face to face with this magazine in checkout aisles and will share your concern with the store manager.
Would your family supermarket sell pornography in the checkout aisle at eye level of children? Would they allow anyone of any age to purchase it? Most grocery store owners/managers would never tarnish their reputation and offend their customers by selling porn, but every store that carries Cosmopolitan magazine is doing just that. Pornography in the guise of a woman's magazine.
Cosmo at one time, many years past, seemed to have a reputation as a trendy woman's magazine filled with fashion, hair and makeup tips. It was marketed for the "liberated" woman. The Cosmo of recent years, and most certainly of today, has much more to do with sex than fashion and it has nothing to do with "liberating" women, but rather is a tool to objectify and degrade women.
From the front cover to the last page, Cosmo is filled with pornographic articles, giving women perverse, sexual "advice". The cover headlines attest to the focus and content of the magazine.
*** "SHOCKING! THE SEX HE CRAVES
Thousands of Men Finally Admit What They're Secretly Aching For"
*** "Surprising Things Guys Find Hot"
*** "New Sexercises That Double Female Pleasure"
*** "I BET YOU'RE WILD IN BED" True Tales of Girls Who Work at Cosmo
The flood of pornographic articles continue as the Table of Contents lists such offerings as:
*** "Naughty Games: Should You Play?"
*** "When Booty Calls Make You Blue"
*** "Cosmo Commandments - 10 Moves You Should Never Make in Bed"
*** "Red-Hot Read - A steamy excerpt from the hot new book"
(All of these articles, and more, are labeled "Hot")
And with each of these articles photos of couples are shown, often partially clad in erotic embraces or poses. Ironically Cosmo prints a disclaimer in the magazine stating: "The models photographed are used for illustrative purposes only; Cosmopolitan does not suggest that the models actually engage in the conduct discussed in the stories they illustrate." So these models don't want to be associated with the sexual behavior depicted in the magazine, but Cosmo has no qualms about legitimizing it for everyone else!
