        Bright Spots

After some thought, I wanted to review some bright spots from our recent election among other considerations.

The Good

  • In his concession speech last night, Senator McCain rightly noted, “This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and the special pride that must be theirs tonight.” As President-elect Obama said in his victory speech last night, “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible …tonight is your answer.” For any Americans who may have felt disillusioned or cynical about politics, last night’s election was truly historic, and we should take some pride in that. America has taken a major step in atoning for the national sin of slavery.

So, perhaps now radical leftwing “educators” will stop denigrating our nation and obsessing about its failures. I hope we will finally move beyond the issue of race and focus instead on the issues that matter most. I pray in the years ahead liberal politicians will stop hiding behind race and start answering for their policies. And I hope that America-haters and black supremacists, such as Jeremiah Wright, the former pastor of Barack Obama’s church, will be disavowed by the black community.

  • While Democrats had a good night last night, so too did marriage protection amendments from coast-to-coast. In Florida, the marriage amendment passed with more than 62% of the vote. In Arizona, it received 56% of the vote. And in California, ground zero of the marriage battle, Proposition 8 is leading with 52%. And, according to the exit polls, African-Americans provided some of the strongest support for the marriage amendment in California, supporting Proposition 8 by a margin of 70%-to-30%.

  • Thirty states have now approved marriage protection amendments by an average vote of 68%. Should President-elect Obama and the expanded Democrat majority on Capitol Hill make any attempt to act on their promise to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, we will be ready!

  • America still remains a fundamentally conservative nation. According to the exit polls, 44% of voters identified themselves as “moderates” and 34% identified as “conservatives.” Just 22% called themselves “liberal.” We’ve clearly got a lot of work to do, but that’s a pretty good foundation for us to build upon!

  • Even though Barack Obama prevailed last night, we can take some solace in the Herculean effort it took to elect him. Barack Obama raised nearly $700 million, and he vastly outspent Senator McCain. He had all the resources of the radical Left – ACORN, MoveOn.org, Planned Parenthood, George Soros, etc. – working for his election. He had the national media on his side, which effectively turned their nightly news broadcasts into negative campaign commercials against John McCain and Sarah Palin.

In addition to all that, Obama had a “perfect storm” of events coincide to boost his candidacy: a recession, the meltdown on Wall Street, the mortgage crisis, collapsing home values and an unpopular Republican incumbent to run against. Hundreds of millions of dollars, hours and hours of media bias, massive voter fraud and an economic crisis. That’s what it took to elect Barack Obama, and it may well have been the only political environment in which he could have won.

The Bad

  • That said, the junior senator from Illinois, after just four years of service in the Senate, is now President-elect Obama. The most radical and inexperienced president in history is about to come into power with an expanded Democrat majority in Congress. Will the radical Left be able to restrain its impulse to raise your taxes? Will Obama push for a precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, which would destabilize the country, after John McCain, George Bush and General Petraeus have won the war? Will liberal Democrats ram through the Freedom of Choice Act, hate crimes laws, the Fairness Doctrine and a massive amnesty in their first 100 days? We’ll find out soon.

  • As of now, it appears as though Republicans lost nearly 20 House seats and five Senate seats. Democrats have likely fallen short of their goal of a filibuster proof majority of 60 seats, and those 44 Republicans are the only “firewall” conservatives will have in Washington to stop the worst of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid agenda. (As of this writing, news reports suggest that Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia will be forced into a December runoff, and these late elections have a history of unpredictable outcomes.)

A number of those who lost last night were strong conservatives, personal friends and some of the best friends of our pro-family, pro-life movement. Their leadership will be deeply missed.

The Ugly

  • Perhaps the biggest disappointment at the ballot box last night was the defeat of every initiative related to the sanctity of life. Parental notification failed in California. Expanded human embryonic stem cell research was approved in Michigan. Euthanasia was legalized in Washington State. And efforts to expand legal protections to the unborn were defeated in Colorado and South Dakota.

While the results of last night’s election were hailed as a great human rights victory, the defeat of these pro-life initiatives clearly indicates we still have a long way to go. As Ravi Zacharias recently said, “We cannot talk about human rights without the right to be human.”

  • Moreover, we have yet to see how President-elect Obama will impact the courts. A Democrat-dominated Senate would have made judicial confirmation battles difficult, but at least with a “President McCain” the right judges would have been nominated. Now there is no chance of even that happening. Pray for Justice Scalia! If President-elect Obama replaces Justices Stevens or Ginsburg, nothing changes. But Justice Scalia is 72 and reportedly weary of being in the minority.

In the days ahead, I will be on the road, speaking at events for pregnancy resource centers and meeting with loyal supporters. We will be discussing how to move forward from here, mapping out an aggressive strategy to rebuild our conservative movement and retake Capitol Hill!

The sanctity of life, the meaning of marriage, the defense of freedom – these are fundamental issues that I will fight for so long as God gives me breath. And while this battle may be over, rest assured, my friends, our cause continues. With your support, I will continue to “fight the good fight” for faith, family and freedom!
