  Big Winners on Tuesday

Carrie Gordon Earll Marriage and family were the big winners Tuesday, as three states voted to protect marriage in their constitutions and Arkansas voted to provide children with both an adopted mom and dad. Florida, Arizona and California became the 28th, 29th and 30th states to amend their constitutions to define marriage as the union between one man and one woman.  Despite tens of millions of dollars spent by gay activists to defeat the marriage initiatives, pro-family leaders in the three states led heroic campaigns to protect marriage from activist judges and lawmakers. "We are pleased Focus on the Family could be a part of the successful campaigns in Arizona, California and Florida," said Jenny Tyree, marriage analyst for Focus on the Family Action. "We give our heartfelt congratulations to the hundreds of coalition members and volunteers who ensured the real winners are future generations of children."  In California, Proposition 8 reverses the state's Supreme Court decision in May that legalized same-sex "marriage.""We know God has gone before us," said Ron Prentice, executive director of the California Family Council. "Tens of thousands of people were praying and fasting to give victory to California and protect marriage."   Read On

BRIGHT SPOTS After some thought, I wanted to review some bright spots from our recent election among other considerations. The Good

  • In his concession speech last night, Senator McCain rightly noted, “This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and the special pride that must be theirs tonight.” As President-elect Obama said in his victory speech last night, “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible …tonight is your answer.” For any Americans who may have felt disillusioned or cynical about politics, last night’s election was truly historic, and we should take some pride in that. America has taken a major step in atoning for the national sin of slavery.

OUR ELECTION Last night was truly a historic occasion: For only the second time in her adult life, Michelle Obama was proud of her country! The big loser of this election is Colin Powell, whose last-minute endorsement of Obama put the Illinois senator over the top. Powell was probably at home last night, yelling at his TV, "Are you KIDDING me? That endorsement was sarcastic!"  The winner, of course, is Obama, who must be excited because now he can start hanging out in public with Bill Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright again. John McCain is a winner because he can resume buying more houses. And we're all winners because we will never again have to hear McCain say, "my friends."  Read On

RETURNED TO ALASKA Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has returned to her home state of Alaska, where she was greeted by dozens of supporters encouraging her to run for president in four years.  The crowd chanted "2012! 2012!" as Palin disembarked her airplane at the Anchorage airport. Asked by reporters if she might run for president, Palin said, "We'll see what happens then." She was returning to the state after spending Tuesday night in Phoenix, where she watched election returns with her Republican running mate, Arizona Sen. John McCain. Prior to her departure from Phoenix, Palin reflected on her brief candidacy that attracted more attention at times than the presidential candidates and drew crowds double and triple the size of John McCain. She described the campaign as "entirely positive." Palin demurred when asked if she will be up next in 2012, saying it was too far off to start thinking about it and that she is just "anxious" to get back to the job of Alaska's governor. "Oh you know it seems like so far - 2012 we will be enrolling him in Kindergarten," referring to her son Trig. Palin then pointed to seven-year-old daughter Piper who had just come back from a swim and was standing next to her mom. "She'll be headed to what? About 5th grade, 6th grade by then. Those are my thoughts at this point is 2012 seeming a far way off today."  Palin Returns to Alaska to Chants of '2012!'
