With such serious issues facing Americans, are statements from the NRA important? And are these statements fair about the president-elect? The National Rifle Association predicts the election of Barack Obama is going to pose a serious threat to the Second Amendment rights of American citizens. Numerous reports around the U.S. indicate that citizens have been racing to purchase both guns and ammunition before Obama takes office next year. On Election Day, a Cheyenne, Wyoming, gun store set a one-day sales record -- then broke that record the next day. The Franklin Gun Shop outside Nashville sold more than 70 guns on Election Day. It was the biggest sales day since opening its doors eight years ago.
The day after Obama was elected, the owner of a shop outside Salt Lake City sold nine assault weapons -- and another gun store owner in Fort Worth reported sales of $101,000 in merchandise, shattering its single-day sales record. NRA spokewoman Rachel Parsons has a theory on the gun run. It is quite apparent, she says, that people are concerned that Obama truly has had a radical record of opposition to the Second Amendment. Or is it apparent people want to protect themselves? Read On |

After more than three decades on the air, Dr. James Dobson and his "Focus on the Family" radio broadcast were inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame on Saturday. The Hall of Fame Steering Committee nominated "Focus on the Family" for the honor in May and, for the first time, allowed the public to vote. More than 50,000 people cast their votes for Dr. Dobson — the largest vote total in the group's history. "We know that radio can entertain and inform. Dr. James Dobson has proven that it can also be a means to impact and elevate lives," talk-show host Hugh Hewitt said as he presented the award to Dr. Dobson. "The Focus on the Family organization counsels and encourages, guides and inspires millions of mothers and fathers and children every single day." As hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Chicago event, Dr. Dobson took the stage. Read On

While not being appropiate for young children, it is fitting and appropriate after Veteran’s Day. That’s because I recently saw the veteran actress of our generation, Meryl Streep, pull off an amazing acting coup. Meryl stars in playwright John Patrick Shanley’s film version of his award winning play “Doubt.” Last week, there was a very odd review of this movie in Variety by the usually trustworthy Todd McCarthy. No one knew what to make of it. He liked “Doubt” but didn’t care for Meryl. That’s Meryl Streep. It didn’t seem possible that was he right. Well, he wasn’t. I am happy to report that Mr. McCarthy was off his game with his “Doubt” review. As usual, but always in a different way, Streep is just phenomenal as Sister Aloysius, the acerbic nun who decides — with little evidence — that her parish priest is having an inappropriate relationship with a 12-year-old boy. The great Cherry Jones played the Sister on Broadway and won a Tony Award. Shanley is gracious Read On |

Michelle Obama visited at least two well-known private schools Monday as she and President-elect Obama prepare to move their two young daughters to the White House in January. The soon-to-be first lady toured Georgetown Day School in the morning and Sidwell Friends School, which Chelsea Clinton attended, in the afternoon. In between, she spent about two hours visiting the residential portion of the White House with first lady Laura Bush. Their husbands met privately in the Oval Office. Michelle Obama flew from Chicago to Washington and back separately from her husband, who did not visit the schools. It was not clear whether the Obamas will look at other schools, and their staff provided no details. Ten-year-old Malia Obama and 7-year-old Sasha now attend a private school in Chicago. A 4,300-year-old pyramid has been discovered in Saqqara, Egypt, the sprawling necropolis and burial site of the rulers of ancient Memphis, Egypt's chief archaeologist said Tuesday. The pyramid is said to belong to Queen Sesheshet, the mother of King Teti who was the founder of the 6th Dynasty of Egypt's Old Kingdom. Egypt's antiquities chief Zahi Hawass made the announcement Tuesday at the site in Saqqara, about 12 miles south of Cairo. Hawass' team has been excavating the site for two years. He said the discovery was only made two months ago when it became clear that the 16-foot-tall structure uncovered from the sand was a pyramid. The new pyramid is the 118th discovered so far in Egypt, Hawass said. |

The Queen Elizabeth 2 is docked safely in Southampton harbor after briefly running aground just outside
the British port. A Cunard spokesman says the venerable ocean liner was heading into her home port on Tuesday around 5:30 GMT when the ship hit a sand bank. Two tugboats and the rising tide pulled the ship free. Eric Flounders says no passengers were injured and that the ship was not damaged. The ship is on its final journey. After nearly 40 years of service and more than two dozen round-the-world voyages, the QE2 is to be reinvented as a floating five-star hotel in Dubai. Prince Philip is to make a farewell visit to the liner Tuesday ahead of her departure for Dubai. |
