I recall reading the last time our nation went through an “economic downturn” that the so-called “adult entertainment industry” weathered the storm very well.

Part of the explanation is that many people are hooked on pornography and will pay for it even when they face serious financial difficulties. Another part of the explanation is that when people face difficult times of whatever nature, some turn to alcohol, drugs, or illicit sex as an escape. It kills the pain, temporarily.

Perhaps the seriousness of the economic downturn we now face will put a real dent in the profitability of “adult entertainment.” But as much as I wish otherwise, I don’t think pornography and “nude dancing” will go away any time soon.

Nor do I see any reason to expect the downturn to have a positive effect on the content of “mainstream” entertainment. If anything we should expect worse, since producing moral slop is usually cheaper than producing quality entertainment!

Clearly, the economic downturn is not likely to reduce the need for MIM’s work, or anyother nonprofit organization battling pornography.

On a related note, I used to think “the media” were a particularly bad bunch when it comes to a lack of morality, and they are.  But when the
financial scandals began to explode several years ago with Enron, WorldCom, etc., it dawned on me that the breakdown of morality in corporate America was not limited to “the media.”

The subprime mortgage disaster and growing credit card crisis are further indications that a restoration of financial integrity is needed in much of corporate America. These problems are also indications that financial integrity is sorely needed in the lives of a growing number of average Americans!

The above does not sour me on capitalism. But the subprime disaster and credit card crisis are further indications (reminders) that no economic system will bring lasting prosperity in the absence of financial integrity (i.e., morality).

The truth is that morality is necessary for the wellbeing of society; and whether we are talking about preserving morality in general or sexual morality in particular, there is a need for both “internal moral restraint” (best under-girded by religious truth and faith) and what my legal mentor Paul J. McGeady, Esq., often described as “moral compulsion.” The latter comes through law.

At this point in our nation’s history, we face both a breakdown of internal moral restraint and a weakening of laws intended to protect morality – a crisis indeed.

All of which is to say, the work of MIM is very much needed, as is anyother nonprofit who battles the pornograph.

While I am on the subject of law, I bring what I hope will prove to be good news in the war against obscenity. At this point, it looks like former Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder will become the next U.S. Attorney General.

On the downside, Mr. Holder served as Deputy Attorney General under former Attorney General Janet Reno; and Ms. Reno was a disaster when it came to enforcement of federal obscenity laws. Obscenity flourished during her watch.

On the positive side, while Mr. Holder was serving as Deputy Attorney General, he met personally with representatives of organizations (including MIM) that fought obscenity; and he seemed genuinely sympathetic. Prayerfully, he still is!

I must confess that I didn’t vote for Barack Obama, but at this point I must hope and pray that he will have a change of heart on some things and become a good president in general and a very good one when it comes to issues of concern to MIM. Thankfully, one doesn’t have to be a Republican to be against obscenity!

Of course, along with the need for law enforcement there is also a need for moral and spiritual renewal in our nation. Thankfully, there is hope for a fallen human race, and each year at Christmas Americans from coast to coast pay homage to the embodiment of that hope.

May God bless you during this special Christmas and Hanukah Season. If you can, please consider a year-end gift to MIM. Many who would like to give can’t do so this year. It’s up to those who can give to now stand in the gap.

In September, a federal jury in West Virginia convicted an Indianapolis-based pornographer on obscenity charges, and a federal grand jury in Montana indicted a Florida-based pornographer on obscenity charges. In November, a state prosecutor in Arkansas also charged the owners of two “adult” businesses with two felony counts of promoting obscene material. Little by little, we are making progress!
