Like sex predators with an addiction for pornography, pigs waiting in line to get their snouts in the feeding trough, come many of the nation's governors -- on the heels of the mayors -- asking Washington for bailout money.
Democratic governors from overspending states like New York, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Ohio are among those seeking financial deliverance. The governors want Washington to pony up $1 trillion for their absolutely-essential-non-negotiable-if-we-don't-get-the-money-people-will-starve programs.
New York Governor David Paterson claims that, because tax revenues have plunged, 43 states now have budget deficits totaling around $100 billion. No, those states have deficits because when times were good and the money was rolling in they thought they could get away with endless new programs, while putting little or no money aside for the inevitable rainy day. Neither did they consider which programs were necessary and which ones were just politically beneficial. Read On |

Obama Picks Stars for Inaugural Which stars are going to play at the 10 official Inaugural balls? Sources tell me that it was only this weekend that President-elect Barack Obama’s Inaugural committee started sending inquiries to potential musical guests. In the mix: Obama stalwarts Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, and Bruce Springsteen, I am told, were each asked to play at specific events around Washington on January 20th. Believe it or not, the Jonas Brothers and possibly Miley Cyrus were also invited to play at a children’s party on January 19th at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, Inauguration night should also see the Grateful Dead get back together for a major "official" party. But plenty of Obama supporting musicians have not been invited to do anything yet, and the word is they’re not so happy. One star who hasn’t heard a word is Billy Joel, who performed a major fundraiser with Springsteen in New York last fall. So far, nada. Read On |

Bill Keller is back in the secular media. Controversial internet evangelist Pastor Keller, founder of Liveprayer.com, has announced he will host a radio program on Tampa's 50,000-watt WWBA-820, owned by Genesis Communications. Beginning Monday, January 5, the program will air live every Monday through Friday from 11 PM to midnight EST. Keller hosted a highly successful nightly TV program on CBS-owned WTOG for Tampa audiences from 2003 until 2007, when CBS executives caved under the weight of the Council on American-Islamic Relations' intimidation tactics. CAIR targets media personalities who question the legitimacy of the Islamic faith. Keller's program was also the target of pro-homosexual groups, as well as the Church of Scientology and the Mormon Church who Keller refers to as cults. Rather than allow CBS to censor his content, Keller chose to move the Live Prayer TV program exclusively to the internet. Pastor Keller currently has over 2.4 million subscribers to his online Daily Devotional, and believes the move was the best decision he could have made.
"The internet is the broadcasting vehicle of the future, and we now have more viewers each night than we ever had on CBS," says Keller. Read On

Testimony in a pre-trial motion to suppress evidence against late-tem abortionist George R. Tiller is set to resume on Tuesday, January 6, after a six-week hiatus. In a case that has been anything but routine, Tiller faces 19 counts of having committed illegal late-term abortions, including one on a 10-year old girl. Scheduled to provide the anticipated courtroom drama are two fierce political rivals, Phill Kline and Paul Morrison. Morrison defeated Kline as Attorney General but was forced to resign in disgrace after news broke of his adulterous affair with a former employee. That woman, Linda Carter, said in a sworn statement that Morrison pressured her to help him impede on-going abortion investigations by Kline, who took Morrison's place as Johnson County District Attorney. Carter has been unwillingly subpoenaed by Tiller's defense and is scheduled to testify. Tiller is asking Judge Clark Owens to suppress the evidence against him in abortion records obtained by Kline as Attorney General, and on which Morrison based the charges Tiller now faces. "Never before have two former attorneys general, and their subordinates - not to mention an illicit lover -been forced to testify by a defendant in a pre-trial motion of a misdemeanor criminal case to give an account for their decisions to prosecute. The proceedings, and the drama they promise to produce, are unprecedented in Kansas history," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. Read On |

Girls Need Dads The latest issue of The Journal of Communication and Religion (November 2008, Volume 31, Number 2) contains an excellent analysis of the importance of opposite-sex parent relationships. The common sense conclusion is backed up with social science data and affirmed by a peer-reviewed scholarly article: girls need a dad, and boys need a mom. Not surprisingly, the study also found that communication is an essential building block for all family relationships — family interactions are the crucible for attitudes, values, priorities, and worldviews. Beyond the shaping and modeling of these essential personal characteristics, the family shapes an individual’s interpersonal system and self-identity. Further, stable homes include specific talk about religion and support for children’s involvement in religious activities. These families create high-quality relationships by specific communication behaviors, such as openness, assurance, and dependency. Those same characteristics, not incidentally, are powerful predictors for marital success or failure.
The authors, G.L. Forward, Alison Sansom-Livolsi, and Jordanna McGovern, stress the fact that a family is more than merely a group of individuals who live under the same roof. Read On |
